Understanding New Medicare GLP-1 Options
Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program: Starting July 1, 2026
What This New Program Is
Medicare has introduced a temporary program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, which begins July 1, 2026.
- Provides access to certain weight-loss medications.
- Operates outside of your standard Part D drug plan.
- Offers a flat monthly cost of approximately $50 if approved.
- View Official CMS Program Details
Who May Qualify
Approval is based on medical necessity. You may be eligible if you have Medicare with drug coverage, your doctor prescribes a GLP-1, and you meet specific health criteria.
Part D Eligible Diagnoses (Requires submission to standard Part D plan first):
- Moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
- Noncirrhotic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) with moderate to advanced liver scarring
- Type 2 diabetes
- History of major adverse cardiovascular (CV) events with established CV disease
For weight reduction only (No Part D diagnosis):
Submit through GLP-1 Bridge for Foundayo®, Wegovy® (injections & tablets), or Zepbound® (Kwikpen®).
How the Approval Process Works
This program has a different process than your normal Part D prescription coverage:
- Your doctor evaluates whether the medication is clinically appropriate.
- Your doctor submits a prior authorization request.
- The request is reviewed through a central Medicare system (not your standard insurance plan).
- If approved, you can pick up the medication at the pharmacy and pay about $50/month.
Important Things to Know
- Not everyone will qualify — approval strictly depends on your medical profile.
- This is a temporary program (currently scheduled through 2027).
- The $50 cost does not count toward your Part D deductible or out-of-pocket maximum.
- It does not replace your existing essential drug coverage.
